Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–2028: A Guide for Pakistani Applicants
Planning research in Switzerland? Start by choosing the right scholarship route. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–2028 offer Pakistani applicants research-fellowship and PhD opportunities. A headline saying “Master & PhD” can be confusing: this is not a general scholarship for Pakistani students starting a taught master’s degree.
This guide explains the Pakistan deadline, the distinction between master’s and doctoral study, funding limits, supervisor preparation and the application process. Read it alongside the official country list and your chosen institution’s instructions.
PAKISTAN DEADLINE AND APPLICATION LINK
The official Asia country list gives Pakistan an application window from 20 August to 31 October 2026. The deadline is 11:59 pm Swiss local time. Pakistan’s listed categories are Research Fellowship and PhD; an arts scholarship is not listed for Pakistan.
Apply through the official Grants Online system, GO ESKAS:
https://www.go.eskas.ch/LoginServlet
Open the current country list from the official scholarship page before applying. Deadlines differ between countries, so a date copied from another country’s announcement may not apply to you.

IS THIS A MASTER’S OR PHD SCHOLARSHIP?
For Pakistani applicants, the relevant choices are a doctoral scholarship or a research stay connected with doctoral work. The Swiss Embassy’s scholarship page distinguishes research funding from ordinary bachelor’s and master’s study.
There is a separate first-master’s route in artistic subjects for a limited group of countries. That does not make this a general master’s scholarship, and Pakistan is not listed for that arts route in the current country table.
If you hold only a bachelor’s degree and want a taught master’s, check scholarships offered directly by the university and programme instead. Decide which degree you need first; then find funding designed for it. Applying under the wrong category wastes time that could go into a suitable application.
Research fellowship or full PhD?
A research fellowship supports a defined research stay rather than an entire new degree. The current research route is aimed at researchers pursuing doctoral work outside Switzerland. A PhD scholarship supports doctoral research in Switzerland. Choose the route that matches your actual registration and research plan.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The current research and PhD rules require a master’s or equivalent by 31 July 2027, or 30 June for ETH Zurich; birth after 31 December 1991; and support from a Swiss academic supervisor. Applicants already in Switzerland must check the residence cut-off: entry must not be before 1 August 2026.
Research fellowships last 6–12 months without extension. PhD funding begins with 12 months and can renew twice, subject to progress. The listed start is 1 September 2027.
Read the full eligibility and exclusion criteria before requesting documents. Keep evidence of your expected degree-completion date, and ask the relevant institution to clarify any uncertainty about qualification equivalence. A promising research idea does not replace formal eligibility.
FUNDING: WHAT IS COVERED AND WHAT YOU STILL PAY
The grant pays CHF 2,450 monthly for one person. Listed benefits include compulsory health-insurance premiums for non-EU/EFTA recipients, CHF 600 towards a rental deposit, a Half-Fare Travelcard and a conditional return-flight allowance.
The scholarship does not cover tuition or semester fees, conferences, fieldwork costs or family allowances. Avoid treating “fully funded” as a promise that every expense will be paid.
Before accepting an offer, make your own budget. Ask the host for its actual charges, look at accommodation deposits and first-month expenses, and check when support becomes available. For research requiring travel, paid datasets or equipment, discuss those costs with the prospective supervisor. Write down who would pay each item rather than assuming it is included.

HOW TO FIND A SUITABLE SWISS SUPERVISOR
Start with research fit. Read the department’s current work, identify a professor whose interests overlap with your proposed question, and explain that connection in a short, personal enquiry. The official FAQ recommends a prepared approach with a CV, motivation, research outline and relevant recommendations. Finding support can take weeks or months.
For an initial email, organise your message around four points:
• Your current qualification and research background.
• The specific question you want to investigate.
• Why this professor’s work is relevant to that question.
• Whether they would consider discussing supervision for the scholarship application.
Use your own evidence: a relevant dissertation, methods training, project or publication. Describe your contribution accurately. “I am interested in your research” is much less useful than explaining which study you read and how it connects to a feasible project.
Avoid sending an identical message to a long list of unrelated academics. Keep a simple record of whom you contacted, the research connection and any response. A generic positive reply should not be treated as the formal support your application needs.
DOCUMENTS: BUILD A CLEAR APPLICATION FOLDER
Prepare a CV, motivation letter of up to two pages, research plan on the FCS form of up to five pages including its non-specialist summary, supervisor’s letter and short CV, academic records, passport and required translations. Supply two referees’ email addresses for system-requested recommendations; check route-specific additions.
Use that list as a preparation aid, then work through every field in the current online application. Save final versions in a separate folder. Open each scan to check that grades, names, stamps and page edges are readable. Make sure dates and project titles agree across your CV, proposal and other records.
Choose referees who can explain your academic work with concrete examples. Ask whether they have enough time to respond, and give them an accurate summary of the proposed project. Do not leave recommendation arrangements until the final evening.
HOW TO MAKE THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL MORE USEFUL
Begin with a question narrow enough to answer within the proposed stay. Explain why it matters, what evidence you will use and how you will analyse it. A timeline should show the work you can realistically finish: preparation, data or material collection, analysis, writing and discussion with the host.
For example, “international trade in developing countries” is a topic, not yet a research question. A more workable proposal identifies the market, period, unit of analysis and outcome. The same principle applies in other subjects: make the planned investigation concrete enough for a supervisor to assess.
Use recent, relevant literature to explain your starting point. State what your project could establish and where its limits lie. Avoid promising results before the research is done. Ask a knowledgeable reader to check whether the question, evidence, method and timetable fit together.
HOW TO APPLY THROUGH GO ESKAS
1. Check Pakistan’s scholarship categories and deadline in the official country list.
2. Read the eligibility rules for the route you intend to use.
3. Secure the required supervision support and prepare your project.
4. Follow the registration and eligibility-check steps in GO ESKAS.
5. Complete the application, arrange the required references and review the requested documents.
6. Submit early enough to correct a problem, and retain the confirmation shown by the system.
Use the online route linked by the Swiss authorities. Do not substitute an email to a professor or an application to a university for the scholarship submission itself.
Scholarship funding and doctoral admission are separate procedures. The official FAQ says that an individual-doctorate applicant needs the supervisor’s support letter but does not need a PhD admission letter at that application stage. A doctoral-school route also requires admission confirmation with the application. Confirm which arrangement your host uses.
The scholarship application is free. Use official application links and keep control of your own account and email.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Can Pakistani students apply for a general master’s degree through this scholarship?
Pakistan’s current list offers Research Fellowship and PhD. Do not interpret the limited-country arts master’s scheme as an ordinary master’s option for Pakistan.
Can I apply without IELTS?
Treat language evidence as a question for your chosen institution and project. Confirm which tests or other proof it accepts before paying for a test. An English-taught previous degree should not be assumed to settle every host’s requirements.
Does a supervisor’s letter guarantee the scholarship?
No. Supervision support is part of preparing an eligible application, not an award decision. Selection also considers the applicant, the project and the potential research relationship.
Are postdoctoral scholarships available for 2027–2028?
The official FAQ says postdoctoral awards will no longer be offered from the 2027–2028 academic year. Check current information rather than reusing an older category list.
What should I do first if I have not contacted a supervisor?
Check eligibility, prepare a focused research outline and contact genuinely relevant academics promptly. With a fixed deadline, assess honestly whether you can assemble a complete application. Do not rely on an incomplete submission being accepted.
